Iamb

Iambic verse

Iambic pentameter

 

Philip Larkin (Old Toad). Born 1922, died in 1985.

Oxford educated.

Librarian at Hull.

Poet laureate.   Balmoral.

Little-Englander.

 

Always too eager for the future, we pick up bad habits of expectancy.

 

Here no elsewhere undermines my existence.

 

Nothing, like something, happens anywhere.

 

Death will be such another thing

All we have done not mattering.

 

… with people wise enough to know my worth.

 

What will survive of us is love.

 

Beauty is accepted slang for yes.

 

Books are a load of crap.

 

They fuck you up, your Mom and Dad

Rimes: there is order in chaos and chaos in order.

 

 

The poem is about a poster advertising SP. It showed an alluring girl in a skimpy outfit. The poster was degraded, first with graffiti, then torn. The poster that was below advocated fight against cancer.

Death prevails.
