2D7 A Horse, a Family and a Dream
A Horse, a Family and a Dream
The text is an article from US News and World Report, released in March 4th, 1996. It is about a trip around the world. A Scottish family of five decided to sell their house to buy a wagon and a horse to travel.
They started in the Orkney Islands, then through Scotland, England, Belgium and France, where they changed horse and bought Traceur. Then they went to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, where they witnessed the beginning of the Balkans War. They moved on to Hungary, Ukraine, and Russia, where they washed in frozen rivers. In Kazakhstan, they were not allowed to go to China because they did not have visas. They went to Mongolia, where they were robbed. They finally passed through China, and then Japan, where they lived the Kobe Earthquake. They crossed the Ocean at the bottom of a cargo ship.
In California, they had to stop to work for money. That is where they were when the article was written. They planned to go to Nova Scotia (in Canada), and then back to Scotland.
The mother was a teacher, so she home schooled the children. The father resigned. The children learnt languages (Russian and Chinese, specially), geography, and social studies.
When they get “home”, they will probably pass their A levels. But the family will have to start from scratch.
This dream is life-changing, and few people dare try it.
